Istanbul, a port city that has served as the capital of two successive great empires and is currently the economic hub of the Turkish Republic, has been devastated by earthquakes at intervals varying from 300 to 100 years. The next one is due any moment. The current city is home to over 12 million living in brittle concrete and masonry housing. The Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul is planning the development of an entirely new satellite city. The project to visualize the proposed city using the Purdue teraDRE/Condor pool presented many challenges because of its complexity and the scale of the area to be visualized (an area of 40,000 acres that will eventually be home to 1.5 million residents).
